Remove background from images
Cut out the subject of any photo with a background remover that runs on your device — no uploads, no sign-up, no watermarks. First use downloads a 44 MB model from this site; after that it works offline.

How to remove a background
- 1. Drop your image onto the tool or click to choose a file. On the very first run the AI model (~44 MB) downloads from this site and starts locally.
- 2. The network finds the main subject and the preview appears on a checkerboard — transparent where the background used to be.
- 3. Pick PNG (exact transparency) or WebP (smaller) and hit Download. The file is saved straight from your browser.
The AI, honestly
This tool runs U²-Net — a salient-object detection network published in Pattern Recognition (2020), best-paper-awarded, open source under Apache-2.0. A compact variant of its weights ("Silueta" ONNX export, ~44 MB) is served from this very site, so nothing is ever sent to a third party: not your image, not even a telemetry ping.
Good at
- People, pets, products, vehicles — the classic "main subject" shots.
- Soft edges to a useful degree; the mask is continuous, not a hard cookie-cutter.
- Plain and complex backgrounds alike — the model estimates the subject, not colors.
Weak at
- Crowded scenes with several equally prominent objects.
- Tiny subjects that fill a sliver of the frame, or abstract/flat images.
- Guaranteed accuracy — when the model is unsure, the cutout shows it. Check the preview.
Output behavior
- Output keeps the original dimensions. Everything outside the subject is transparent.
- PNG preserves pixels and alpha exactly. WebP re-encodes smaller and keeps transparency. JPEG flattens onto white (no alpha in that format) and re-encodes lossily.
- Changing format or quality never re-runs the AI — it repackages the same cutout locally.
- Metadata is not carried over: the output is written as a brand-new file.
Privacy
The image is read into memory, segmented by the model, and re-encoded locally. Nothing is transmitted to any server — the only network traffic is the one-time model download from this same website. Close the tab and everything is discarded.
Browser & device compatibility
- Runs everywhere Web Workers run; WebGPU (current Chrome/Edge by default, Safari 26/) makes it visibly faster, WebAssembly is the automatic fallback.
- First run downloads the model once — a metered connection might prefer Wi-Fi. After that it is cached and repeat sessions start immediately.
- Very large images need memory on-device; older phones may process slowly but the tool keeps working.
Troubleshooting
- "That file type isn't supported" — the file isn't a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF image. Rename or re-export it first.
- "Your browser couldn't decode this file" — the type is recognized but this browser can't read it (often AVIF on an older browser), or the file is corrupted.
- Empty or patchy cutout — the model found no clear subject. Try an image where the subject dominates the frame.
- Download stalls at 0% — the model couldn't load. Reload the page; the download resumes from this site's cache.

Frequently asked questions
How does AI background removal work here?
A neural network (U²-Net, open-source under Apache-2.0) runs inside your browser via WebGPU or WebAssembly. It looks at the image, estimates which pixels belong to the main subject, and makes everything else transparent — fully on your device.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is processed locally; it never leaves your device. The one thing that is downloaded is the model itself (~44 MB, served from this site, one time) — after that it is cached and the tool even works offline.
What kind of images give the best cutouts?
Photos with a clear main subject: people, pets, products, vehicles. The model was trained on salient-object data, so a subject that fills a fair share of the frame works best. Crowded scenes, tiny subjects and very flat images can yield an incomplete or empty cutout.
Why does the first run download a 44 MB model?
Honest AI needs real network weights — there is no shortcut that looks this good for complex backgrounds. It downloads once from this site and is then cached by your browser, so the next session starts instantly and works offline.
Will the output keep my image's full resolution?
Yes — the cutout is written at the same pixel dimensions as your original file. Full resolution in, full resolution out, with no server step downscaling your HD photos along the way.
Which export format should I choose?
PNG keeps the transparency exactly and is the safe default. WebP keeps transparency too with smaller files. JPEG has no alpha channel, so it flattens the cutout onto white — useful when a print service or an old tool demands JPG.
