Should you convert AVIF to JPG?
AVIF compression is excellent, but the format only decodes in recent browsers — Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+. When your image has to open on older browsers, in an email or on a print kiosk, JPG is the universal dialect. The conversion adds one quality-controlled lossy pass on top of AVIF's; transparency is flattened to white.
In short: Choose AVIF → JPG for guaranteed compatibility everywhere.
| Property | AVIF (source) | JPG (output) |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy or lossless, very efficient | Lossy — quality was fixed when the file was saved |
| Transparency | Yes — full alpha channel | No — transparent areas are already flattened |
| Best for | Cutting-edge compression where viewer support is known | Photos and finished images that open everywhere |
| Worth knowing | AVIF only decodes in recent browsers — current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+. | The detail JPG threw away at save time cannot be brought back — converting only decides what happens to what is left. |
AVIF to JPG — frequently asked questions
How do I convert AVIF to JPG?
Drop your AVIF files into the converter above (several at a time is fine), confirm the output is set to JPG, then hit convert and download the results. Everything happens locally in your browser while the files stay on your device.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
One quality-controlled lossy pass is added at the quality you choose — the default is set to a level where the difference is normally invisible. Transparency in the AVIF file is flattened onto a white background, because JPEG has no alpha channel.
Will the JPG file be smaller than my AVIF file?
Usually yes — JPEG compresses photographic content far more aggressively than AVIF does, often cutting the file to a fraction of its size. Flat graphics with text see smaller gains (keep lossless formats for those).
What happens to transparency and EXIF metadata?
The AVIF's transparency is flattened onto a white background — JPEG has no alpha channel, so painted areas become plain white instead of see-through. EXIF metadata such as camera model, timestamps and GPS coordinates is not carried over: the output is written as a brand-new file containing pixels only. That is a privacy bonus, not a bug.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The converter decodes and re-encodes your images locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your files never leave your device, which is why the tool keeps working even on slow or offline connections.
