Should you convert AVIF to PNG?
A pixel-exact PNG copy solves the same compatibility problem without adding any compression: what AVIF decoded is what gets saved, transparency included. The PNG file is larger than the AVIF original, but it is openable by every tool and ready for further lossless editing.
In short: Choose AVIF → PNG for a bit-faithful, tool-friendly copy.
| Property | AVIF (source) | PNG (output) |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy or lossless, very efficient | Lossless — every pixel stored exactly |
| Transparency | Yes — full alpha channel | Yes — full alpha channel |
| Best for | Cutting-edge compression where viewer support is known | Screenshots, logos, graphics with text and hard edges |
| Worth knowing | AVIF only decodes in recent browsers — current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+. | Pixel-exact storage makes PNG files large for photographic content. |
AVIF to PNG — frequently asked questions
How do I convert AVIF to PNG?
Drop your AVIF files into the converter above (several at a time is fine), confirm the output is set to PNG, then hit convert and download the results. Everything happens locally in your browser while the files stay on your device.
Does converting AVIF to PNG lose quality?
No extra quality is lost. PNG is lossless: it stores the decoded pixels exactly, so the copy adds no new artifacts of its own. (AVIF only decodes in recent browsers — current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+.)
Will the PNG file be smaller than my AVIF file?
Usually not. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so converting a AVIF file often yields a larger file — that is the price you pay for lossless storage. If your goal is a smaller file, JPEG or WebP output is the better pick.
What happens to transparency and EXIF metadata?
Transparency survives the trip: the PNG copy keeps the same see-through areas. EXIF metadata such as camera model, timestamps and GPS coordinates is not carried over: the output is written as a brand-new file containing pixels only. That is a privacy bonus, not a bug.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The converter decodes and re-encodes your images locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your files never leave your device, which is why the tool keeps working even on slow or offline connections.
