Should you convert GIF to PNG?
A still GIF — the kind saved as a graphic or pulled out of an animation — converts to a clean PNG with real 8-bit transparency, freeing it from GIF's 256-color palette and 1-bit transparency. Pixels are copied exactly, so the PNG copy can look smoother around gradients than the GIF. Animations convert their first frame only: this tool produces still images.
In short: Choose GIF → PNG to turn a still GIF into a full-quality, transparency-capable image.
| Property | GIF (source) | PNG (output) |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy by design — max 256 colors per frame | Lossless — every pixel stored exactly |
| Transparency | Yes — 1-bit (fully transparent or fully opaque) | Yes — full alpha channel |
| Best for | Simple graphics, memes and short animations | Screenshots, logos, graphics with text and hard edges |
| Worth knowing | GIFs are palette images: smooth gradients already have 256-color banding baked in, and converting an animation takes its first frame. | Pixel-exact storage makes PNG files large for photographic content. |
GIF to PNG — frequently asked questions
How do I convert GIF to PNG?
Drop your GIF files into the converter above (several at a time is fine), confirm the output is set to PNG, then hit convert and download the results. Everything happens locally in your browser while the files stay on your device.
Does converting GIF to PNG lose quality?
No extra quality is lost. PNG is lossless: it stores the decoded pixels exactly, so the copy adds no new artifacts of its own. (GIFs are palette images: smooth gradients already have 256-color banding baked in, and converting an animation takes its first frame.)
Will the PNG file be smaller than my GIF file?
Usually not. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so converting a GIF file often yields a larger file — that is the price you pay for lossless storage. If your goal is a smaller file, JPEG or WebP output is the better pick.
What happens to transparency and EXIF metadata?
Transparency survives the trip: the PNG copy keeps the same see-through areas. Note: GIF animations are converted to their first frame — this converter produces still images. EXIF metadata such as camera model, timestamps and GPS coordinates is not carried over: the output is written as a brand-new file containing pixels only. That is a privacy bonus, not a bug.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The converter decodes and re-encodes your images locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your files never leave your device, which is why the tool keeps working even on slow or offline connections.
