Should you convert JPG to PNG?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so converting JPG to PNG never loses anything beyond what the JPG format already discarded. It is the right move when a tool or platform requires a PNG file — avatar uploads, icon sets, assets for further editing — or when you plan to keep editing and re-saving the image, because a copy re-saved as PNG does not degrade further, while a JPG re-saved as JPG does. The trade-off is size: a photographic JPG usually becomes a much larger PNG file.

In short: Choose JPG → PNG when a PNG file is required or you will keep editing — not when you are trying to save space.

How JPG and PNG differ
Property JPG (source) PNG (output)
Compression Lossy — quality was fixed when the file was saved Lossless — every pixel stored exactly
Transparency No — transparent areas are already flattened Yes — full alpha channel
Best for Photos and finished images that open everywhere Screenshots, logos, graphics with text and hard edges
Worth knowing The detail JPG threw away at save time cannot be brought back — converting only decides what happens to what is left. Pixel-exact storage makes PNG files large for photographic content.

JPG to PNG — frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to PNG?

Drop your JPG files into the converter above (several at a time is fine), confirm the output is set to PNG, then hit convert and download the results. Everything happens locally in your browser while the files stay on your device.

Does converting JPG to PNG lose quality?

No extra quality is lost. PNG is lossless: it stores the decoded pixels exactly, so the copy adds no new artifacts of its own. (The detail JPG threw away at save time cannot be brought back — converting only decides what happens to what is left.)

Will the PNG file be smaller than my JPG file?

Usually not. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so converting a JPG file often yields a larger file — that is the price you pay for lossless storage. If your goal is a smaller file, JPEG or WebP output is the better pick.

What happens to transparency and EXIF metadata?

The PNG target supports transparency, so any that exists in your image is kept. EXIF metadata such as camera model, timestamps and GPS coordinates is not carried over: the output is written as a brand-new file containing pixels only. That is a privacy bonus, not a bug.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The converter decodes and re-encodes your images locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your files never leave your device, which is why the tool keeps working even on slow or offline connections.

When does a JPG file to PNG conversion make sense?

When a platform requires PNG, when the image will go through further edits or re-saves (PNG never degrades with repeated saving), or when you want the widest lossless compatibility. Converting a JPG to PNG will not restore detail the JPG already lost — it guarantees the pixels stay identical from that point on.
