How to convert JPG to WebP
-
Step 1
Add your JPG images
Drag JPG files onto the box or click to browse — queue as many as you like. They stay on your device the whole time.
-
Step 2
WebP is already set
WebP is preset as the output. The quality slider sits at a balanced default for WebP; raise it for more detail, lower it for smaller files.
-
Step 3
Convert and download
Each finished row shows its new WebP size next to the original. Download the files one by one — no waiting rooms, no watermarks.
Should you convert JPG to WebP?
WebP usually encodes the same photo smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, so this is the best conversion when the goal is a smaller file for a website, app or media library. Your JPG file's compression is already done — converting cannot restore what was lost — but a WebP re-encode typically shaves another 20–30% off photos without a visible difference at reasonable quality settings. Every current browser displays WebP.
In short: Choose JPG → WebP to make photos smaller while keeping them photo-friendly — the everyday web conversion.
| Property | JPG (source) | WebP (output) |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy — quality was fixed when the file was saved | Lossy or lossless, very efficient |
| Transparency | No — transparent areas are already flattened | Yes — full alpha channel |
| Best for | Photos and finished images that open everywhere | Modern websites and apps where file size matters |
| Worth knowing | The detail JPG threw away at save time cannot be brought back — converting only decides what happens to what is left. | WebP itself supports animation too — this tool exports still images only. |
JPG to WebP — frequently asked questions
How do I convert JPG to WebP?
Drop your JPG files into the converter above (several at a time is fine), confirm the output is set to WebP, then hit convert and download the results. Everything happens locally in your browser while the files stay on your device.
Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?
At the default quality the difference is not visible in practice: the slider lets you keep more detail (larger file) or squeeze harder (smaller file) before the WebP is written. Transparent-looking areas keep their existing background.
Will the WebP file be smaller than my JPG file?
Almost always. WebP is the most efficient encoder the browser supports, so the copy is typically the smallest you can make of this image — transparency and visual quality included.
What happens to transparency and EXIF metadata?
The WebP target supports transparency, so any that exists in your image is kept. EXIF metadata such as camera model, timestamps and GPS coordinates is not carried over: the output is written as a brand-new file containing pixels only. That is a privacy bonus, not a bug.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The converter decodes and re-encodes your images locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your files never leave your device, which is why the tool keeps working even on slow or offline connections.
