How to convert GIF to WebP

  1. Step 1

    Add your GIF images

Drag GIF files onto the box or click to browse — queue as many as you like. They stay on your device the whole time.

  2. Step 2

    WebP is already set

WebP is preset as the output. The quality slider sits at a balanced default for WebP; raise it for more detail, lower it for smaller files.

  3. Step 3

    Convert and download

Each finished row shows its new WebP size next to the original. Download the files one by one — no waiting rooms, no watermarks.

Should you convert GIF to WebP?

WebP handles GIF's two jobs — small files and transparency — with modern efficiency, so a still GIF converts into a WebP that is usually smaller and often cleaner. Like JPG and PNG targets, animation is reduced to the first frame; the animated-WebP format exists, but this tool exports stills.

In short: Choose GIF → WebP for the best still-image replacement of a GIF on the modern web.

How GIF and WebP differ
Property GIF (source) WebP (output)
Compression Lossy by design — max 256 colors per frame Lossy or lossless, very efficient
Transparency Yes — 1-bit (fully transparent or fully opaque) Yes — full alpha channel
Best for Simple graphics, memes and short animations Modern websites and apps where file size matters
Worth knowing GIFs are palette images: smooth gradients already have 256-color banding baked in, and converting an animation takes its first frame. WebP itself supports animation too — this tool exports still images only.

GIF to WebP — frequently asked questions

How do I convert GIF to WebP?

Drop your GIF files into the converter above (several at a time is fine), confirm the output is set to WebP, then hit convert and download the results. Everything happens locally in your browser while the files stay on your device.

Does converting GIF to WebP lose quality?

At the default quality the difference is not visible in practice: the slider lets you keep more detail (larger file) or squeeze harder (smaller file) before the WebP is written. Transparency is preserved in WebP output.

Will the WebP file be smaller than my GIF file?

Almost always. WebP is the most efficient encoder the browser supports, so the copy is typically the smallest you can make of this image — transparency and visual quality included.

What happens to transparency and EXIF metadata?

Transparency survives the trip: the WebP copy keeps the same see-through areas. Note: GIF animations are converted to their first frame — this converter produces still images. EXIF metadata such as camera model, timestamps and GPS coordinates is not carried over: the output is written as a brand-new file containing pixels only. That is a privacy bonus, not a bug.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The converter decodes and re-encodes your images locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your files never leave your device, which is why the tool keeps working even on slow or offline connections.
