Should you convert WebP to PNG?
When an editor, a build step or a desktop app refuses WebP files, PNG is the lossless way out: the pixels survive the trip unchanged, transparency included. The file will usually grow — with a lossless source format, the PNG copy is often the largest copy you can produce — but it is bit-faithful and openable by essentially everything.
In short: Choose WebP → PNG when you need exact pixels in a format every tool accepts.
| Property | WebP (source) | PNG (output) |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy or lossless, very efficient | Lossless — every pixel stored exactly |
| Transparency | Yes — full alpha channel | Yes — full alpha channel |
| Best for | Modern websites and apps where file size matters | Screenshots, logos, graphics with text and hard edges |
| Worth knowing | WebP itself supports animation too — this tool exports still images only. | Pixel-exact storage makes PNG files large for photographic content. |
WebP to PNG — frequently asked questions
How do I convert WebP to PNG?
Drop your WebP files into the converter above (several at a time is fine), confirm the output is set to PNG, then hit convert and download the results. Everything happens locally in your browser while the files stay on your device.
Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?
No extra quality is lost. PNG is lossless: it stores the decoded pixels exactly, so the copy adds no new artifacts of its own. (WebP itself supports animation too — this tool exports still images only.)
Will the PNG file be smaller than my WebP file?
Usually not. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so converting a WebP file often yields a larger file — that is the price you pay for lossless storage. If your goal is a smaller file, JPEG or WebP output is the better pick.
What happens to transparency and EXIF metadata?
Transparency survives the trip: the PNG copy keeps the same see-through areas. EXIF metadata such as camera model, timestamps and GPS coordinates is not carried over: the output is written as a brand-new file containing pixels only. That is a privacy bonus, not a bug.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The converter decodes and re-encodes your images locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your files never leave your device, which is why the tool keeps working even on slow or offline connections.
