Should you convert PNG to JPG?

JPG photographs are dramatically smaller than the same picture stored as PNG, because PNG spends bytes keeping every pixel perfect and JPG spends what the eye can afford. Converting a photographic PNG to JPG therefore cuts file size a lot with usually no visible difference. Two things to know: any transparency is flattened onto white, and one lossy pass is added — screenshots and text-heavy graphics can develop slight fuzziness around sharp edges, so keep PNG for those.

In short: Choose PNG → JPG for photographs where size matters; keep PNG for screenshots, logos and anything transparent.

How PNG and JPG differ
Property PNG (source) JPG (output)
Compression Lossless — every pixel stored exactly Lossy — quality was fixed when the file was saved
Transparency Yes — full alpha channel No — transparent areas are already flattened
Best for Screenshots, logos, graphics with text and hard edges Photos and finished images that open everywhere
Worth knowing Pixel-exact storage makes PNG files large for photographic content. The detail JPG threw away at save time cannot be brought back — converting only decides what happens to what is left.

PNG to JPG — frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG?

Drop your PNG files into the converter above (several at a time is fine), confirm the output is set to JPG, then hit convert and download the results. Everything happens locally in your browser while the files stay on your device.

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?

One quality-controlled lossy pass is added at the quality you choose — the default is set to a level where the difference is normally invisible. Transparency in the PNG file is flattened onto a white background, because JPEG has no alpha channel.

Will the JPG file be smaller than my PNG file?

Usually yes for photographs and screenshots alike — JPEG's quality-controlled compression turns uncompressed or palette content into something much smaller.

What happens to transparency and EXIF metadata?

The PNG's transparency is flattened onto a white background — JPEG has no alpha channel, so painted areas become plain white instead of see-through. EXIF metadata such as camera model, timestamps and GPS coordinates is not carried over: the output is written as a brand-new file containing pixels only. That is a privacy bonus, not a bug.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The converter decodes and re-encodes your images locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your files never leave your device, which is why the tool keeps working even on slow or offline connections.

Does a PNG file to JPG conversion lose transparency?

Yes — JPEG has no alpha channel, so any transparent areas in the PNG are flattened onto a plain white background in the JPG copy. Nothing else is lost but pixels: the conversion happens locally and one quality-controlled lossy re-encode is applied. If you need the see-through areas visible, stay with PNG or choose WebP output instead.
